As you well know by now, we shall lose our old copper-wired landline and get a fibre optic cable instead. This can have implications for some people although your landline provider should be in touch with you to make certain all your gadgets will work for you without any interruptions.

The main u3a office has organised a presentation explaining all about the changes and how it might affect you, called: ‘What the future changes in landlines will mean for you’.
BT’s Digital Voice Engagement Manager, Chris Hockley, will give the presentation via Zoom on Tuesday 23rd September 2025 @10 am. He works for BT Group helping people move from the old landline system to a new more reliable digital service. Chris’ job is to make sure that everyone, including local councils, charities, and care providers, understands what’s changing and how to make the switch as easy as possible. It lasts for about an hour.
You can find further information on the main u3a website including a booking form:
u3a Home: https://www.u3a.org.uk/
then go to Events,
then go to Online Learning Events and scroll down 3 or 4 lines until you see a lady sitting in her sitting room talking on a landline phone.
Click on that to get to Eventbrite which deals with the tickets (free) and will eventually send you the link to join on the day.
That was quite tedious. You can use the link below which takes you direct to Eventbrite to book your place:
If you cannot get on to Zoom, you might like to team up with a friend and/or a neighbour who can.
There are also some very good explanations about the switch-over by AgeUK.
